Mr. Ali was President of Zanzibar, Tanzania's revolutionary government between January 30, 1984 - 24 October 1985, before becoming President he served as Tanzania's Vice President and Interior Minister; He also served as Chairman of the ruling 'Cham Cha Mapinduzi' (CCM) Party from 1990 to 1996.
He is the father of Tanzania's present Minister of Defence and National Service Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Of note is the fear in which African leaders live in on assumption of any political office no matter how small the portfolio, this translates to the use of retinues of bodyguards, thugs and all security apparatuses at their disposal.
The gentleman Sir Ali is ageing gracefully and has been spotted many times taking public transport, which he calls his favourites because he is afforded the opportunity to mingle with the people he so much loves.
